Author Lynn Plourde visiting BCS on December 6th.

We were very fortunate to welcome the school based educator from New Hope Midcoast to BCS this week for presentations with grades K-8.
Their messages center on building healthy relationships with all of the classrooms, but also include a focus on safe and kind choices with kindergarten; teamwork and acceptance with grades 1 & 2; friendships and being an upstander to unkind behavior in grades 3 & 4; healthy boundaries, consent and communication in grades 5 & 6; and with 7th and 8th grade, they examine how power and control can influence relationships, as well as sharing information and resources around domestic and dating violence. On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, Bristol Middle School science students participated in the BioMe program, which highlights bioscience careers available in Maine. This event focused on marine science opportunities, featuring presentations by two scientists, Hailey Greenleaf, and Brigid Carr, from the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in Boothbay.
The scientists showcased a variety of marine science career paths and guided students through two engaging hands-on experiments. The first experiment demonstrated ocean acidification caused by increased CO2—a major greenhouse gas—and sparked discussions on how livestock contributes potent greenhouse gases like methane. Students explored innovative solutions such as feeding seaweed to cows to reduce their methane emissions.
The second experiment delved into the science of ocean currents, showing how the interaction of waters with different densities drives these vital movements in our oceans.
This enriching day provided students with a deeper understanding of marine science and the impactful role it plays in addressing global environmental challenges. - Mr. Crafts
