About South Bristol School

South Bristol School is a unique school on the coast of Maine serving students in grades pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. We have an a cohesive and collaborative team here at the South Bristol School where our learners are our priority. With approximately eighteen staff and a student to staff ratio of about 3:1, we have the very unique privilege to focus on individualized learner outcomes, social emotional growth, and personalized learning opportunities for each learner.

Our location and size provides us with amazing latitude for project-based, interdisciplinary learning opportunities:

  • Outside learning environment leveraging local coastal intertidal ecosystem, marine life, fishing industry, geology and weather.

  • Local farms and orchards

  • Maine Maritime Museum boat building

  • Educator in residence from Camp Kieve who works with our students from late Fall to early Spring

  • Witch Island Preserve workshop week where students visit and study the island environment, flora, fauna and history

  • Learn local town history with visits to the old school house on the S Road, visits to the South Bristol Historical Society and grandparents lunch visits

  • Space week!

  • Walk through the woods path to the Rutherford Library for reading, art and other activities, or down the path to the boat landing in The Gut.

  • The Darling Marine Center is also very close where we visit for projects on kelp farming, fisheries and marine wildlife.

  • Extracurricular activities available include circus arts, outdoor adventure club, civil rights team, photography club, lego robotics, newspaper club, jump rope team, a greenhouse and vegetable garden, bee hives, spelling bee, book club and more

South Bristol School is located in the small picturesque town of South Bristol. With a population of about 1,130 and a rich and significant history, South Bristol is located at the terminus of the Damariscotta River on the coast of Maine.

Other area features include stunning and beautiful coastline full of coves and islands, iconic Pemaquid Harbor and Light, public water access, walking paths on beautiful conservation lands and preserves, great businesses including yummy restaurants, and is close to other amenities of Damariscotta, and only an hour from Portland.

Maine and South Bristol in particular, is a perfect place live and to raise your children.
